Jewelry and geology have always been closely linked. Most of the natural materials used to create jewelry are mined in various forms. In a silver pendant for example, the focal stone is probably extracted from the ground, cut, polished, and then set in silver. Silver of course, is mined, refined, and purified and then used in jewelry making. At times though, the linkage between geology and jewelry is more complex...more innovative....and therefore more interesting! Take a look at this short video:
In each of these silver pendants, the focus is a large natural ammonite fossil. Ammonites were a group of marine animals that are now extinct. The ammonites first appeared on earth about 400 million years ago, and became extinct about 60 to 65 million years ago.
